Musée du Arvre: Great Forgeries
With commentary written by preeminent contemporary artist, Makoto Aida and book design by groovisions, mother-son-and daughter trio Musée du Arvre takes us on an adventure to question what is originality and what is art through imitations of masterpiece paintings of Johannes Vermeer, Leonardo da Vinci, Andy Warhol to Elizabeth Peyton and many others. In 2015, the exhibition “Great Forgeries” was held at Shibuya Parco Museum in from October 30 to November 16.
What is Musée du Arvre?
Musée du Arvre is an art group formed by two elementary school children, Tenma (b. 2004) and Kokomi (b. 2005), and led by their mother Akiko Fujiwara (b. 1976). They have been featured on various TV shows, such as, Zoom in!! Saturday, Sukkiri!, NEWS ZERO, NHK Metropolitan Area News and Zip!. Being an art enthusiast, Akiko encouraged her two children to copy masterpiece paintings in their own unique way. Tenma and Kokomi were able to capture the essence of the original paintings and pose their own questions – what is “original”, and what is “art”? The Musée du Arvre trio uncovers the existing concept of creativity and further explores the fun side of art.
