New Book Release 

Yelena Yemchuk’s Photography Book “Anna”

 

Shot over a period of 20 years by Ukranian female photographer Yelena Yemchuk who is frequently featured in fashion magazines such as Vogue Italia, “Anna” expresses an honest bond between two friends as well as an extreme intimacy. The photography book itself was designed by Studio 191 from New York, a creative company known for their graphic design work for Louis Vuitton x Supreme. Yelena also arrived in Tokyo with Anna and an exhibition of “Anna” was held in Bookmarc Tokyo from 2017.9.30-10.9.

Yelena Yemchuk

Yelena was born in Kiev, Ukraine in the year 1970. During her early teens she moved to America with her family as a political refugee. After studying at the Parsons School of Design and the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, Yelena went on to create most of the music videos and album covers for famous American rock band, The Smashing Pumpkins.

In 1997, Yelena began shooting fashion photos for magazines like Vogue Italia, Vogue Japan, Harper’s Bazaar, Numero, Dazed and Confused, Another Magazine, Lula Magazine, The New Yorker, W, and Violet. She also headed campaigns for Kenzo, Anna Sui, and Dries Van Noten.

In March of 2011 Yelena released Photography Book “Gidropark”, a collection of photos she took at an amusement park in her hometown Kiev between the years 2005 to 2008. While Yelena spends most of her time in the US, she makes sure to spend a portion of each year in the Ukraine.

Studio 191

Studio 191 is a creative company located in New York and run by Laura Genninger and David Ortega. Best known for their graphic design works done for high profile brands like Louis Vuitton, Supreme, and Nike, as well as their art direction for the magazine Another. The graphic design for recent Louis Vuitton x Supreme was also done by Studio 191.

Masanobu Sugatsuke

Editor and President of creative company Gutenberg Orchestra. Born in 1964 in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Sugatsuke has served as the editor-in-chief of various magazines including Composite, Invitation and ecocolo, edits all kinds of media from websites, advertisements to exhibitions, as well as planned a variety of projects. Sugatsuke has also edited a number of Photography books for people like Kishin Shinoyama, Daido Moriyama, Yoshihiko Ueda, Mari Sarai, Mark Borthwick, and Jeff Burton. Publications include “The Way of Edit” and “The World of Post-Consumption”, as well as a collection of interviews of 150 people related to photography, written for Commercial Photo Magazine entitled “New Freedom of Photography”. Sugatsuke is also the Chief Editor of United Vagabonds.
